Nagpur, Maharashtra: The ongoing dispute over Aurangzeb’s tomb in Nagpur escalated into violent clashes on Monday night. Riots broke out in the Mahal and Hanspuri areas, leading to vandalism, arson, and stone-pelting incidents targeting the police. In response, authorities have imposed a curfew in multiple regions to curb further unrest.
How Did the Violence Begin?
The violence erupted at approximately 7:30 PM near Chitnis Park in Mahal, where an enraged mob pelted stones at police personnel and set vehicles ablaze. Subsequently, between 10:30 and 11:30 PM, rioting spread to Hanspuri, intensifying the chaos. According to Nagpur Police, around 25 to 30 police officers sustained injuries, and 60-65 individuals have been detained.
What Led to the Unrest?
The conflict stemmed from demands to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb. Right-wing organizations like Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had previously threatened to demolish it. Tensions escalated after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently expressed support for its removal. Further fueling the controversy, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s remarks describing Aurangzeb as a good ruler intensified the divide.
Curfew and Security Measures in Place
Following the outbreak of violence, a curfew has been enforced in key areas of Nagpur, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Shakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar. Authorities have invoked Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code (BNS), which grants the government power to impose movement restrictions to maintain public order and prevent further violence. Under this regulation, leaving home without urgent necessity is prohibited, with exceptions for medical emergencies, government employees, and students appearing for exams.
Police Response and Current Situation
The Nagpur Police have attributed the violence to misinformation and assured that the situation is now under control. Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singhal confirmed that law enforcement is reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Initial findings have led to the identification of several suspects, and arrests are expected soon. Authorities are also investigating whether the violence was premeditated or incited through social media channels. A heavy police force has been deployed in the affected regions to maintain peace and restore normalcy.
