Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has etched his name in Indian Premier League (IPL) history by becoming the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. The 38-year-old surpassed Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) swing specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar during CSK’s IPL 2025 clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday, April 8.
Ashwin claimed 2 wickets in 4 overs, conceding 48 runs at an economy of 12. Despite the high economy, the two breakthroughs took his IPL tally to 185 wickets in 217 matches. He now holds an average of 29.92 and an economy rate of 7.18, with best bowling figures of 4/34.
In contrast, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, known as the “Prince of Swing,” has taken 184 wickets in 179 IPL games, averaging 27.28 with an economy of 7.57. His career-best figures stand at 5/19.
Ashwin now trails only Yuzvendra Chahal and Piyush Chawla in the all-time IPL wicket-takers list.
Chahal (PBKS): 206 wickets in 164 matches, best: 5/40, avg: 22.83
Chawla: 192 wickets in 192 matches, best: 4/17, avg: 26.60
Tuesday’s IPL 2025 match also saw PBKS opener Priyansh Arya shine with a maiden IPL century, powering Punjab to a commanding 219-run total. CSK, chasing the big target, fell short by 18 runs.
Priyansh was awarded Player of the Match for his exceptional batting performance. With this win, Punjab Kings now sit at 4th in the points table with 3 wins and 1 loss, while CSK is placed 9th with just 1 win in 5 matches.
